Open Girls Knockout Football

In Week 10 of Term 2, the Open Girls Football Team played their Division 1 Semi-Final round of knockout games against Sacred Heart College and Golden Grove High School. It was a wet and windy day at St Michael’s College with the wind heavily favouring the team kicking to the southern end of the ground.

St Michael’s College would kick into the wind in the 1st Quarter against Sacred Heart College, however worked hard to kick one goal apiece. Isabella Benedictson, Asha Meers, Teagan Dunbar, and Madison Kravinskis worked hard in defence to negate the wind advantage Sacred Heart possessed in the 1st and 3rd Quarter. Marlie Fiegert, Emma Kilpatrick and Hayley Conlon worked hard in the midfield all game with ruck Lili Dixon to ensure we took advantage with the wind and set up a blistering final quarter, as St Michael’s College were down by three points. St Michael’s College hit the front by three points with two minutes to go until Sacred Heart College were able to manage a kick after the siren to decide the game. Sacred Heart College 25m out, into a strong wind, did not manage to kick the goal as St Michael’s College ran away with a three-point win.

The second game of the day against Golden Grove High School was an entirely different game. St Michael’s College were able to control the game, both into the wind and with the wind: piling on seven goals to nil in the game. Georgie Blades was strong up forward all day kicking five goals against Golden Grove High School to set up the win. Zahlia Niemann was also strong at centre half forward and in the ruck for the day, creating various opportunities in the forward half on the ground. Two wins for the day sends St Michael’s College to their fourth consecutive Division 1 Knockout Grand Final. We pass on our congratulations to all the girls for their achievements thus far and wish them the best with the remaining games to come.
