World Environment Day – Year 1 Excursion
On Friday 2 June, our four Year 1 classes joined over 1,300 students from other South Australian Schools to celebrate World Environment Day at the Botanical Gardens. The students engaged in four sessions, run by different environmental organisations and presenters.
We learnt about the important role Earthworms play in ensuring our soil and gardens thrive and even sowed our own seeds!
We learnt how a thoughtfully packed lunchbox and careful composting helps our world and protects our environment against plastic pollution. Did you know that some plastics can take up to 450 years to break down?
We asked our young protectors of creation for ways that we could all be more sustainable. Here’s what they suggest:
“Reduce, reuse, recycle” – Alina S
“Pack a nude food lunchbox” – Thomas S
“Be careful not to step on plants in the garden” – Arielle
“Make sure you put all your food wrappers in the correct bins” – Nikola
“Pick up rubbish you find every day” – Mia
“Remember that rubbish left on the ground harms the animals” – Zahli
We had lots of time to explore the garden, play with stick insects, throw Autumn leaves and even climbed the giant trees, pretending to be monkeys! We can’t wait to use what we learnt to help make our school and home as green as possible.
How can you join us in protecting our precious gifts of creation?
