Counselling Services
At St Michael’s College, our college counsellors are qualified professionals with extensive experience in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of children, young people, and their families. College Counsellors provide a range of support for students, acknowledging that social, emotional, and psychological wellbeing impacts learning. Counsellors collaborate with teaching staff and key community members to provide holistic care to students.
Our counselling service provides students a safe environment to discuss their concerns, connect with resources and develop coping strategies. We support students facing academic stress, mental health issues, social difficulties and family problems. Common issues addressed by the counselling team include anxiety, body image, friendship and peer relations, depression, disordered eating, academic stress, family breakdown, grief management, school refusal, self-harm, substance use and self-confidence.
Counselling services include:
- Brief intervention: Short term assistance to support emotional regulation, skill development and psychoeducation.
- Therapeutic counselling: Provide one on one appointments, psychoeducation, information on external support services and holistic collaboration with relevant support networks.
- Groupwork: Activity based to enhance wellbeing, targeted skills and social connections. Involvement in whole of school and year level wellbeing and pastoral activities.
Counselling services are confidential. Families and teaching staff may be included to support students overcoming challenges where necessary. Consent for the sharing of information will be sought and respected in all situations except for information relating to risk, safety (to oneself or other’s) and illegal activity.
St Michael’s counselling services complement, not replace or duplicate, external mental health supports.
