Year 7 Camps – Term 2
After having to cancel our Year 7 Orientation Camp in Week 4 of Term 1 due to the extreme heat, we were lucky enough to postpone this key College event for Week 5 of Term 2. Albeit it a bit cooler, the near 300 Year 7 students and 30 SMC staff thoroughly enjoyed their Camp experiences across five renowned South Australian campsites with Active Education. Whether our students were at Aldinga, Yankalilla, Wallaroo, She Oak (Finnis) or Douglas Scrub (McLaren Flat), they managed to enjoy themselves by engaging in outdoor activities and programs that enhanced their social, communication, teamwork, risk-taking and thinking skills. An unforgettable experience that our 2023, Year 7 students and staff will never forget; the perfect way for the students to start their High School journeys at St Michael’s College.
Aldinga
Student comments
“This term 7G.2, 7G.4 & 7G.5 classes attended Aldinga camp. We learnt about friendship, leadership, and teamwork. We went to TreeClimb, on nature walks and visited the beach. It was very cold but we had lots of fun. Sleep was rocky as everyone developed their relationships with friends and teachers. It will be a memory that lasts a lifetime” – 7GPC02 class leaders Sibella & India.
Yankalilla
Student comments
“For our camp this year we went to Dzintari campsite in Yankalilla, the Tree climb was definitely our favourite activity, Especially course 4 with all the ziplines! We found the tree Climb very engaging and enjoyable for everyone. A lot of our classmates made a lot of new fiends from the other class, and we got to meet a lot of new people through different activities. Playing sport in our free time was also a huge highlight of the camp with many of us learning how to play a new sport. Lastly, we would like to thank all the Active Ed staff and all the SMC staff for organizing this very engaging camp.” – 7BPC03 students Samar and Jack.
Wallaroo
7BPC4 and 5 went to Wallaroo for our school camp. We left school at 9AM and reached Wallaroo at around 11AM, we had a quick discussion about how we should behave, and we went through some housekeeping rules. After that we got settled into our dorms. then we ate lunch and began our activities. The activities were fishing, geocaching, kayaking, lawn bowling, relationships and many more. On Monday night we went on a night walk to see the silo show and we also walked down the Wallaroo jetty.
For breakfast on the second day we had everyone’s all-time favourite pancakes, after breakfast we got ready for our activities but sadly kayaking got cancelled later in the day due to bad weather, but luckily we got to do Billy karting which is like go karting but your teammates have to push you while you are in the kart. on the third day we woke up and packed our bags ready to leave. we did a couple of group activities such as bracelet making and tribal activities. after those we ate lunch and packed the buses and left Wallaroo. Overall the camp was a great success and we all enjoyed it. We all hope that we can go there again . Vivaan
She Oak (Finnis)
Student comments
“Camp this year was an extremely enjoyable experience. The activities were enjoyable and fun, my favorite being either the kayaking or orienteering. The two active ed employees (Jesse and Lisa) were also very helpful and funny. The food was amazing, my favorites being either the desserts, dinners or pancakes. Over the entire camp, I learnt a lot about my friends and about people I didn’t know” – 7BPC01 student Kit.
Douglas Scrub (McLaren Flat)
Student comments
“At camp, we did many fun activities like tree climb, we went on a bush walk, we did an orienteering activity, group development, and finally bouldering! We spotted cool animals like koalas and kangaroos while on our bush walks. At night we would do fun things like watching movies and doing quizzes. While it was raining we still had lots of things to take part in like making survival bracelets and doing stretching activities. The camp provided delicious meals like sausages in bread, pancakes, cereal, lasagna, chocolate cake, apple crumble, etc. Everyone had heaps of fun and we’re sure everyone made lots of new memories.” – 7GPC03 class leaders Lyla and Georgie.
