
Professor Craig Simmons, Chief Scientist for South Australia and Old Scholar, visits St Michael’s College
St Michael’s College had the honour of welcoming Chief Scientist of South Australia and Old Scholar Professor Craig Simmons FAA FTSE to the Secondary Campus.
Professor Simmons shared his career journey with current Year 11 Biology, Chemistry and Physics students, emphasising the importance of pursuing STEM disciplines. He highlighted the projection of 3,300 new jobs for professional STEM graduates by 2029, along with the growing demand for STEM VET (Vocational Education and Training) graduates. In South Australia, industries such as Defence, Space and Advanced Manufacturing present as exciting pathways for students who are considering a future career in STEM.



Professor Simmons, who attended the College from 1981 to 1988, fondly remembered the wonderful learning environment and community of learners at St Michael’s College. He spoke highly of his STEM teachers and acknowledged how their guidance played a pivotal role in shaping his educational journey. His outstanding Year 12 results opened numerous doors for his future, including becoming the first member in his family to attend university.
Professor Simmons pursued a double degree in Engineering and Science at the University of Adelaide, later completing a PhD in Hydrology. Today he stands as a leading groundwater scientist, having made significant contributions to United Nations research initiatives and achieving the highest accolades in his field, including membership in the Australian Academy of Scientists.


During his visit, Professor Simmons endorsed the preliminary plans for the new St Michael’s College STEAM Centre at the Secondary Campus, praising the positive impact this state-of-the-art facility will have on the future of our students. The STEAM Centre forms a key component of our exciting 10-Year Master Plan and will provide cutting-edge facilities, integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics at the College.
