8/9 STATEWIDE KNOCKOUT BASKETBALL GRAND FINAL

On Thursday 18 November, a team of Year 8 and 9 girls played in the 8/9 Statewide Knockout Basketball Grand Final day at Lights Community and Sports Centre.

Their first game was a slow start, playing a tough Modbury High School team. The team had tremendous energy but the ball just wasn’t connecting and therefore didn’t get the result we would’ve liked going down to Modbury by 7.

The team improved as each game went on, beating St Francis De Sales, then Henley High, and ended up playing Modbury again for the Grand Final. The girls came to play in the final game, with their efforts leading to a great win of 38-18.

An excellent effort from the squad. Congratulations to the girls on a great carnival!

STATE NETBALL TEAM SQUADS

Congratulations to Year 12 student Monet Lyle (12PC-10) and Year 10 student Lily-Mae Balkwill (10PC-05) who have been selected in the 2022 State Netball Team Squad. Monet has been selected for the 19U team and Lily-Mae for the 17U team. The squads will come together in January to train prior to the final Team and Development Squad announcement in February.

The SMC community wish you both the best of luck!

YEAR 10 LONG TAN AWARD

Congratulations to Year 10 student Paul Choimes (10PC-10) who has been awarded the ADF (Australian Defence Force) Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Award.

The ADF Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Awards began in 2006 to recognise students who demonstrate leadership and teamwork within both the school and the broader local community. At the same time, they recognise those who display strong values, such as doing one’s best, respect for others and “mateship”, characteristics that are integral to Australian society. The awards are an important initiative by the Australian Government in conjunction with the Australian Defence Force designed to encourage senior students – tomorrow’s leaders – to actively participate in the life of their schools and local communities.

The Battle of Long Tan holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Australians. It is also a fitting tribute to the Long Tan veterans, as the very traits they demonstrated such as determination, mateship, teamwork, tenacity, compassion, and leadership, are the same attributes we hope to encourage and recognise in students.

Well done Paul!

SEALINK AWARD

Congratulations to Year 10 Student Isla Allen (10PC-03) on winning the SeaLink “Ferry of the Future School Competition”.

Secondary students in South Australia were encouraged to apply their learnings from STEM subjects and draw on eco-friendly transport solutions for inspiration, by designing a ferry which further nurtures sustainable best practices.

Isla produced an outstanding entry that was both creative and thoughtful, and has won herself a family holiday to Kangaroo Island.

Well done Isla!

Community Notes

COLLEGE COMMENDATION

The College wishes to acknowledge Year 11 student Avah Topp (11PC-08) on a commendation received from a member of the public.

Avah was recently involved the National Pharmacies Christmas Pageant in which she played the role of a clown on the ‘A Violin for Christmas’ float along with students Claudia Sherratt (11PC-08), Chelsea Liu (11PC-04), and Bridie Dolan (11PC-01). Their role was to create funny routines with their props of ice creams and cakes, and try to put as many smiles on the audiences faces as possible, and Avah did just that.

The member of the public contacted the College to express the following sentiment, We had two brief interactions with Avah and both times she showed such kindness for my daughter, who has Down Syndrome. The first time was on Friday during the photo shoot for the Advertiser and my daughter was nervous about being on some stairs and Avah reassured her and made her comfortable. The second time was on Saturday when my daughter was feeling a bit overwhelmed and Avah saw her from a distance and came over to cheer her up. I was really impressed with selflessness and kindness. She’s a credit to her parents and her school.”

Thank you Avah for being a supportive and caring role model at St Michael’s College and in the wider community.
