Co-curricular – Sports

Year 9/10 Knockout Basketball

On Thursday 17th November our Year 9/10 Knockout Girls Basketball team, played in the grand final round at Lights Community and Sports Centre.

The day started with our team playing against Sacred Heart in Game 1, which we won 31-20. Then Game 2 was against Unity College with another win 31-9.

Our final game we couldn’t make a shot, which made it a hard slog against Immanuel College and we went down 24-7.

We then played in a cross-over semifinal against the top placed team in the other pool, for a chance to make the grand final, and in our case this was a Caica Cup rematch.

We had a great team effort in the semi, with everyone bringing their A games and managed to have a convincing win against Henley High 42-26.

This meant we moved into the actual grand final game with a rematch against Immanuel College.

This game was very different to the one we played in the minor round. The girls came out fighting taking the first half 24-19 with Sienna Grieger making 5 – 3 point shots in a row. She was on fire.

The team was super switched on all game, with some great defense and on offense kept the ball moving and creating open shots.

Late in the second half Immanuel kicked it up a notch and pegged back our lead. Late in the game the team had a couple of chances to get back in front, but the shot just wouldn’t drop and in the dying seconds we lost by 1 point, 36-35.

The whole squad of girls contributed to the lead up to the final game, and although going down by 1 point, this was an amazing effort by all involved.

Skateboard Art at SMC!

One of this fortnight’s character strengths of the week is CREATIVITY, so there is no better time to share this fantastic artwork. SMC is a school where each individual is known, valued and cared for… and art is a big part of who we are! Every Monday and Thursday at lunchtime, Room 73 transforms into an incredible space of creativity where students can be who they want to be and imprint little pieces of their style and personality onto skateboard decks! We’ve seen some awesome artwork throughout the year, and here’s just a little taste (please keep in mind not all of these are complete, some are just progress shots)!

Many of these decks, as well as other skateboards will be on display later in the year and in 2023 as well

Special mention: A very special Mention to Zac ‘the genius’ Mullins (Year 7) and Marlie ‘the OG’ Cummings (Year 8), our deserving SMC Art Club award recipients for 2022.

Showcasing the exceptional work of Year 12 students who have completed Visual Arts, Design, Photography, Design, and Technology in 2022, the exhibition highlighted the resilience and creativity of young practitioners, who have worked under difficult circumstances again this year. The opening night was a great success and provided opportunities for families and the wider community to celebrate the outstanding work of our senior students. See our showcase video.

Year 10 Drama

This semester’s two Year 10 Drama classes have recently concluded their group productions. One of our focus texts for the semester was Shakespeare’s Macbeth and each class presented a play which explored the themes of the original text via parallels in the lives of modern characters. The two plays presented were The Curse of Macbeth by Kirsten Doherty (Mrs Burns’ class) and Living With Lady Macbeth by Rob John (Ms Zappia’s class). Both productions were received well by their audiences and saw the cast and crew shine.

It has made us extremely proud to see the way our students have grown in confidence and creativity, as well as building strong professional relationships through creating production teams and working through the creative process. Both production teams have extended their employable skills, grown as an ensemble of collaborative and supportive theatre makers, and have moved their audiences’ hearts and minds. Congratulations to all. We are excited to see your future performances!

Year 11 Drama Production

The Year 11 Drama class, also known as Flux Theatre, presented their Semester 2 production of Sean Riley’s ‘Beautiful Words’ on Wednesday and Thursday of Week 2. The play is an epic chronicle of the refugee experience, which weaves together different stories of survival, told through the eyes of three children in different times and places. The outcome is heart-rending, humorous, and surprising by turns. From the horrors of Auschwitz Concentration Camp in the final days of World War II, to Taliban-ruled Kabul, to present day Australia, this enthralling play presents a rich tapestry of human experience, overlapping lives, and the bonds that unite generations. The ensemble performed with skill and professionalism, leaving their audience with much to reflect upon. This meaningful show was very well received by people in the community, and we thank those who attended for their support of Drama at the College.

Congratulations Alyssa Faranda

Congratulations to Alyssa Faranda (Year 7), on her recent major role in the production “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.

Alyssa had the main role of Charlie, and did a magnificent job, receiving rave reviews such as this:

“Alyssa Faranda made a very believable and remarkable Charlie. What an incredible local talent, captivating the audience through her exceptional acting and singing, she entertained from start to finish. Her onstage interactions with Mrs Bucket (Mandy Russell), Grandpa Joe (Connor Russell) and Willy Wonka (Kane Mobbs) felt genuinely authentic. A true highlight of the show was Alyssa’s performance, perfectly cast in the role of Charlie.”
