Term 3 Week 9 2022

From the Principal

Dear St Michael’s College Community,

Pulse 14 St Michael’s College Live-in Concert with the Billy Joel Tribute Show Australia

Pulse 14 lived up to the promise of a fantastic show featuring SMC Old Scholar and current parent, Anthony Marafioti (Class of ’93) as Billy Joel, accompanied by his talented band which also included Daniel Braiotta (Class of ’95) on guitar.  The connection between our students and the Billy Joel Tribute Show Australia musicians was truly outstanding and a credit to our fantastic Music team.

The show featured almost 200 music students across the stage involving St Michael’s Primary and Secondary students as well as Star of the Sea’s Senior Band.

This year we were especially excited to feature our brand new Junior Choir involving Reception to Year 3 students, our first ever co-educational music ensemble.

To our talented students, teachers, ensemble directors and support staff,  thank you for collaboration and energy offered towards entertaining over 550 guests at this spectacular event.

Kind regards,

Mr Damian Patton
Acting Principal

Our Lived Lasallian Experience
St Michael’s College staff were involved in a whole school reflection day on Friday September 9. The day provided an opportunity to connect with our rich Lasallian history and reflect how we are connected to the much larger and longer Lasallian story. This story continues to be written, lived out and experienced in the present time. It was an opportunity to gather, pause, and contemplate how each person is uniquely contributing to this ongoing story, and how it is lived out in the present time. Through the lens of our founding story, staff were challenged to find encouragement for our personal, professional, individual, and collective journey at St Michael’s.

We thank our presenters Br John Cantwell and Philippe Dulawan, from the Lasallian Mission Council team, for facilitating a challenging and informative day in developing our understanding of our Lasallian Charism.

Robert Dempsey, Director of Mission

Celebration of the Sacraments
The Sacraments are not a graduation but an initiation and a continuation. The sacraments initiate, fortify and continue the life of faith.
This faith was celebrated at Sacred Heart Church last weekend where six St Michael’s students received the Sacrament of Confirmation and first Holy Communion.  It is also celebrated and lived in the life of our students with the mission of living and proclaiming the Gospel compassionately, joyfully and through the ongoing work of peace and justice.

The Sacraments do not graduate us from one level to another; rather, they lead us on the road of continuous conversion and transformation that embraces the individual, the community and society, while leading us to eternal life.

Congratulations to our students on their Sacraments Celebration.

Always Learning Always Will Be

Back in the day if you asked a student why they went to school they would say to learn and if you asked a teacher what they do all day at school they would say teach. The conversation would stop there.

Oh, how things have changed !

The Portfolio Conference Evening and Expo at the Primary campus on Tuesday 20 September proved just that.

We believe that all our students are capable and competent learners and given the right environments and opportunity they will flourish.  One of the ways we seek to develop students’ perception about themselves as learners is through student driven learning conversations. Each student was supported by their teacher to explain to their parents exactly what and how they had been learning this semester.  From our newest learners, the Lasallian STARS to our Year 6 veterans, students chose what to showcase and highlight and they found the words to explain exactly what they had been doing.

The teachers also went the extra mile on Tuesday and in Founders Hall each year level team and specialist learning area exhibited a range of activities and inquiries that are part of the rich tapestry that is our primary curriculum.

The expo looked and felt fantastic – it was buzzing with proud students and impressed parents – many a parent made a point of stopping me to say things like

“ tell the staff , this is a lot, this is amazing, they are amazing, we appreciate their hard work, the creativity and thought that is on show here is amazing, it is so good to be back part of the school community.”

The expo and the PCE event illustrated that our R-6 curriculum is underpinned by the use of technology, sustainable ideas, inquiry and all the things that matter!

It was a great event and the best part of it was the way we all worked as a team.  Every single member of staff contributed to an event that celebrated learning in all its shapes and forms.

I am grateful to be part of this great team, from the front office staff, maintenance, IT and the Inclusive Ed team to name a few.

Thank you to all the families that braved the elements to work in partnership with us and their child to help them be the best they can be.

The old saying it takes a village surely runs true at 78 East Avenue.

Mentoring Program

During Weeks 8 and 9 of Term 3 the Primary Reception and Year 1 students were visited by the Year 8 and 9 Leaders from our Secondary Campus. This is part of our cross campus mentoring program that commenced in 2021, with the introduction of girls to the Primary School. The program allows for authentic leadership opportunities amongst student leaders and provides the primary students with mentors who role model our school values.

The Year 1 students had a focus on ‘being brave and trying new things’. Each group shared a special story about a time where they were brave and then collaborated to create bravery badges. The students were inspired by the Year 9’s and have already shown the attributes of these wonderful leaders.

The Reception students had a focus on ‘relationships and getting to know our big buddies’. They were very proud to show the leaders around our campus and share their favourite spaces. The students participated in some fun games to get to know their buddies and then created an artwork together. They cannot wait for their next visit.

Meeting Patty Mills

Recently, Ngarrindjeri and Narungga students Mason (Year 2) and Carter (Year 1) got to spend some quality time with Patty at the Rebel Sport Event in Rundle Mall.  Patty is a role model for all Australians and in particular for First Nations children.  Patty spoke about his Foundation, NBA career and reinforced values of gratitude, hard work and giving back to community.  Barkindji student Lachie Jones (Year 5) was also fortunate to spend time with the legend at Adelaide Airport.  All three boys are proud First Nations peoples and aspiring athletes. What an experience!

Let’s talk – Appearance Ideals and Expectations

Last Wednesday, the Year 8 girls listened to a presentation from the Butterfly Foundation. The session focussed on factors that place pressure on our young people to look and be a certain way. The girls were a great audience and responded to the positive nature of the presenter. What follow are some reflections written by some of our students:

The Butterfly Foundation Presentation was an excellent way of showing young women the negative effects of comparing yourself to other people. Not only did it reflect on women’s body issues, but it also touched on how boys are also facing self-worth problems and reminded us that we are never alone. The presentation was a huge help and had a great effect on how I see body image, and to remind myself to self-love. Harper

I enjoyed listening to the presentation yesterday. As a teen girl in 2022, it feels as if myself and others around me must follow a specific stereotype to ‘fit in’. I have struggled with body acceptance and loving myself for exactly who I am. Listening to Rachel giving us helpful and positive ways to change negative self-talk touched my heart and made me realise that no one is perfect and only you can be in control of your life. Jaqi

The Butterfly Foundation presentation was inspiring and uplifting as it provided me with positive ways to not only love myself, but also others. It encouraged me not to be influenced negatively by social media and helped to create ways to positive self-talk. It also helped me learn to become the best version of myself and live a more authentic life. It was a great presentation overall. Lucy

The butterfly foundation was inspiring and informative. It showed me that everyone is different, and I shouldn’t worry about what other people think. The environment made me feel included and safe, she was very trustworthy and welcoming. She was different to other presenters and made it exciting and interesting to watch. Lucy

The Butterfly Foundation presented a very informative presentation. The lady created a safe and inclusive environment, where I felt comfortable to share. The topics mentioned were clear and relevant. The lady shared her personal experiences and related well to us; this was comforting to know we are not alone. I enjoyed this presentation as the speaker was enthusiastic, kind and fun!  Liza

Year 7 Walk for Hutt Street

As part of their Year 12 Health & Wellbeing Course, students, Kayley T, Montana D, Amelia H, Emilia S, & Danica C, organised a fundraising activity for the Year 7 cohort to raise awareness for homelessness in South Australia. During extended Pastoral Care, the Year 7s participated in a pseudo ‘Walk a Mile in My Boots’ activity, where the whole cohort completed two laps of the College Ovals. While completing the walk, students were prompted with further information about the Hutt St Centre and homelessness.

The activity aligned perfectly with the College’s Mission and Vision; Saint Michael’s is a Catholic School in the Lasallian Tradition which is committed to the Christian Education of the young, especially the poor. Students were offered the opportunity to donate to the Hutt St Centre while being educated on homelessness within South Australia. This is what some of the students learnt:

Tara- It’s really sad that there are over 6,000 homeless people in South Australia.

Cadence- I found it awful that not every night homeless people have shelter or a place to sleep.

Ella- It would be so hard being homeless.

Eden- I took a lot out of the activity because I felt like I was doing something to help.

Sienna- People should know that homeless people don’t have a choice in their environments.

Congratulations Senior Dance Students

A huge congratulations to the 2022 Senior dance students and Stage 1 and 2 dancers, for recently performing a powerful, emotional, and inspiring final showcase for the College community. The girls’ continuous commitment and dedication to their passion for dance blew the audience away!

What’s been happening in the library

“If we want to nurture empathy in our learners so they can understand different perspectives and explore alternate ways of doing, being and becoming, we must ensure that rich literature is at the heart of every home, library and classroom”.      – Foundation for Learning and Literacy

This year’s CBCA’s Book Week theme, “Dreaming with eyes open” was celebrated at St Michael’s College during Week 5 and 6 this term. The theme explores how reading changes our lives. It transports us into other people’s lives, allows us to experience other perspectives and empower us with new possibilities. Reading provides an ocean of opportunities: from developing empathy and compassion for others, igniting imagination and resolve, to fostering greater resiliency, confidence and creativity in our increasingly complex world.

On Tuesday 23rd August (Week 5), we were fortunate to have book illustrator Craig Smith with us to run workshops with Yr 7 and 8 English classes. He shared many tips on how to start drawing with shapes then relying on imagination and viewpoint to develop the detail and intent. Students were guided through steps to draw an illustration in 20 minutes and were amazed at how good their finished sketch looked!

Congratulations to all 9 teams who participated in the Yr 8 Readers’ Cup in weeks 5 and 6. The competition came to an end with an incredible Grand final, which could not have been any closer! 8BPC 05 and 8GPC 03 both finished on an equal 15 points, forcing the quiz to continue until a clear winner was decided. After 5 tie breaker questions, the 8GPC 03 team was finally able to clench the cup with their accurate and detailed response.

Grand Final result:

8GPC 3 won with 15 points plus 5 tie breaker points

8BPC 5 runners up with 15 points plus 4 tie breaker points

8BPC 6 third place on 15 points

8GPC 2 fourth place on 10 points

Congratulations to the 8GPC 3 Team: Maeve Nicholas, Sanur McMahon, Jessica Burton and Anelise Bewry on your well-deserved win on the day!

As part of the Yr 9 English curriculum, students created Book trailers to promote a book they enjoyed this year. With such a high calibre of storytelling on a digital platform, it was a challenge to choose only three winners. Subsequently, we have announced two new categories: Runners-up and Worthy acknowledgements.

Congratulations to the following students on delighting us with their talents.

YEARS 7-9 WELLBEING CHARACTER STRENGTH FOCUS

Week 9: Teamwork

As people we are social beings whose lives, in all aspects, benefit from teamwork. From raising children (as highlighted by the African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child”), to our lives at home, and as we know, teamwork is also critical in the workplace.

At St Michael’s we see the results of teamwork each day. We see ongoing teamwork evolve in the EcoGarden, especially now that it is blossoming with spring- Have you seen it lately? And of course, in the classroom and a range of cocurricular activities that enable our students to grow to be the learners and leaders of the world.

Several weeks ago now, Wellbeing Week unfolded and encircled the St Michael’s Community in a warm and colourful cloak of positive emotions; It really was teamwork in action. From students to teachers and non-teaching staff- everyone was on board to create a set of diverse and engaging opportunities for the whole community to enjoy and unite in.

Students smiled as they held the baby animals in the petting zoo, and those who attended the LEC auditorium for the Tiny Habits session, left feeling valued and cared for, and with some useful ideas too. Others savoured zooperdoopers, or donuts at recess or lunch, and they engaged with enthusiasm in sporting competitions. They sang confidently as they participated in Karaoke and participated in the Happy Snaps poster collage, together, in the Middle School. With the support of Communications and Customer Relations staff, this display will be evident for everyone to see on the Library windows soon!

Another great example of teamwork has been evident in the follow up to the Devices presentation last year. Last year a dedicated team of students and staff worked towards promoting better habits for our health where devices are concerned. Their leadership and creativity in designing innovative ideas and strategies was the outcome of their teamwork. The posters they worked on were launched and distributed during Wellbeing Week, hoping to inspire some of our community towards healthier device use habits.

This week, Year 8 student leaders went to work with their younger brothers and sisters at the Junior School campus, and with the goodwill of students and staff, Charities week led by Year 9 and 10, has enabled a range of activities on offer for students over the course of the week. In this case, the teamwork will result in supporting others who can use our help- in the form of a number of charities. Further to this, Year 12 Health and PE students collaborated in running an oval walk for Year 7 students on Wednesday to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness.

These examples are representative of only a few of the experiences our students are offered at St Michael’s. It’s evident that our community really is blessed by these opportunities with teamwork at their core.

Teamwork inspires us towards stronger creativity and solution seeking and it energises and helps us reach our goals and work towards developing stronger wellbeing in ourselves and those whose lives we touch!

Enjoy your weekend!

YEAR 12

The SATAC University Application Deadline is 30 September for Equal Consideration.

Any Year 12 student contemplating a university pathway in 2023 (or even to defer and take up in 2024) should register a SATAC Application by 30 September. Once students have an eight digit SATAC registration number, they have the ability to add further preferences, change the order, or even delete preferences through to 4 January 2023.

There are a few exceptions where course applications close before 4 January.

30 September: Final closing date for Medicine, Dental Surgery, Oral Health and Veterinary Bioscience at the University of Adelaide.

30 September: Final closing date for Year 11 Flinders Grade Scheme.

28 November: Final closing Date for Creative Arts Drama at Flinders.

1 December: Final closing date for Medicine at Flinders.

Please note that almost all courses are flagged with a statement that they may close and not accept new applications after 1 December 2022. It is important that all preferences you may be considering are amongst your preferences by those dates. Click here for more information.

Many students who have applied for an eligible Flinders University course and entered and uploaded details of their Certificate 3 on the SATAC Website, can see they may have an offer on their SATAC Application. If this is the course students want to enrol in that is fine, just wait for enrolment details likely to be sent in January. Students can always add other preferences up until 1st of December and then change the order of preferences through to 4th January. That way, once Year 12 results are released if there is a different first preference students may still get an offer for that course. This is assuming by the 4 of January there is a different course as a higher preference.

Year 11 Grade University of Adelaide and Flinders University Conditional Offers emails went out this week. Please note Flinders will keep emailing out offers up to the closing date of 30th September. Their Year 11 scheme is STILL open.

Students may have an offer from each University. The key to this, given SATAC will only make one offer, is that by January 4 students need to have their most preferred Conditional Offer course ranked higher than the other Conditional Offer amongst their SATAC preferences.

We have some students with 4 offers in place, one with certificate 3 via Flinders, a Conditional Offer through Flinders Assessment Centre, a Conditional Offer based on Year 11 grades at Flinders University and another Conditional Offer through University of Adelaide. A very confusing time, so please seek help if required. All these offers require a completed SATAC Application by 30 September at the minimum.

Students needing help with their applications should book in at the LEC desk for an appointment with one of the Career Counsellors. We remind students that there is a comprehensive PowerPoint on the Careers and VET Portal on SEQTA. Look under Important Info: Career Presentations Year 12 Student SATAC Presentation. It explains the application process, complete with video links.

FLINDERS UNIVERSITY

The Flinders Year 11 Grade Admission Pathway application deadline is 30 September for both SATAC Application and Flinders application on the Flinders Website.  Many students have now received an email from Flinders flagging their Conditional Offer. If students want this course, then by January 4 2023 it will need to be their highest competitive preference on their SATAC Application. Students need to achieve their SACE and meet any set prerequisite and fulfill any other application requirements.

A reminder that Flinders base their considerations on the best five Year 11 subject grades, and students just need to satisfy SACE* and any prerequisite and application requirements to take up a Conditional Offer.  Another difference with the University of Adelaide scheme is that the grades can go to a minimum of three B grades and C grades for some courses. Your ‘eligible’ Flinders University preference needs to be your first preference by 30 September 5:00 pm. It can be changed in preference position after that.

*Note: A minimum ATAR of 70 is required for all Education/Teaching courses even under the Year 11 Grade Scheme.

Click here for more information.

There is a livestream information session on Friday 23rd September: https://events.flinders.edu.au/events/year-11-results-pathway-livestream-information-session/

SATAC AND TAFESA APPLICATION DEADLINES

Application deadlines for TAFESA Semester 1 2023 offers stretch through to December, however we continue to remind students that if a course becomes competitive, offers are based on date of application. Students should apply to their chosen course ASAP.

INTERSTATE COURSES

The deadline for most interstate courses through the relevant Tertiary Admission Centre is approximately 30 September. It is imperative interested students check these dates carefully and well before to ensure no early closing dates or extra application requirements need to be submitted in advance.
