Term 3 Week 4 2021

From the Deputy Principals

Dear St Michael’s College Community,

Celebrating Excellence

This week the College celebrated the Semester 1 academic achievements of our students across Reception to Year 12. In addition we acknowledge and  congratulate all students who have achieved their own personal successes in Semester 1.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the format of our assemblies changed to reflect the current requirements:

  • the Primary Campus Assembly was livestreamed to parents;
  • the presentation of certificates for Years 8 to 12 students took place in Pastoral Class and;
  • to provide our Year 7 students with an understanding of the esteem in which we hold their achievements, a Year 7 assembly was organised in Founders Hall where students experienced a mini version of our formal Academic Assembly.

We are hopeful of returning to our usual format moving forward.

Ms Joanne Gilmore, Director of Teaching & Learning – Primary reflects:

Working with younger learners is a true joy because of the diversity of talents and interests that are on display every day amongst our students. The learning spaces at the Primary Campus reflect this diversity and encompass both the high tech and the natural worlds, which assist our students with being flexible in their approach to learning. In recognising these students, we are celebrating the value that these young learners have put on working with others and striving hard in order to develop their unique set of talents. We congratulate them on setting themselves up with a love of learning that will grow with them as they progress through life.

A principle I have learned along the way is that ‘how we learn is just as important as what we learn’. Congratulations to all award winners who have embodied both the ‘how’ and ‘what’ of learning.

Secondary Awards

Academic Excellence
Awarded to students who averaged an ‘A’ grade across their Semester 1 subject areas.

Academic Endeavour
Awarded to students who achieved ‘Excellent’ or ‘Good’ for Application to Study and Behaviour in class for all subjects.

Congratulations to the following students in Years 7 to 12 who achieved Academic Excellence and/or Academic Endeavour awards for their Semester 1 studies.

Language Competitions

During the Year 7 Academic Assembly, Ms Angela Benedetti recognised and celebrated the additional successes in three different languages competitions held this year. Congratulations to all students who participated in the competitions, and a big thank you and congratulations to Ms Benedetti and the Italian Department for their passion and commitment in making these extracurricular opportunities available to our students. The results are outstanding!

2021 Education Perfect Languages World Championships

246 St Michael’s students took part in the EP Languages World Championships in May. It was wonderful to see so many students again demonstrating persistence and resilience, participating not only in the Italian questions, but also exploring the other languages on offer, reflecting their curiosity and love of learning.

After coming first in South Australia in 2018 and 2019, and then 2nd after Mitcham Girls’ High School last year, this year St Michael’s reclaimed its top spot for Italian in SA with a margin of over 7000 points!

St Michael’s finished:

  • 1st overall for Italian in SA (out of 43 schools)
  • 32nd overall in Italian world-wide (out of 1,068 schools) (= top 3% for Italian in the world)
  • 3rd globally for Italian out of 116 schools in the 1000+ students category
  • 32nd for Italian in Australia (out of 779 schools) (= top 4% in Australia)
  • 17th overall in SA across all languages (out of 67 schools)
  • and 3rd for ARABIC in SA out of 24 schools!

RECEPTION OLYMPICS

The Reception students have loved watching and learning about the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, so we decided to host our own Reception Olympics at St Michael’s Primary Campus. Reception students and staff flew to Tokyo where Mr Patton officially opened the games! We competed in equestrian, weight lifting, hurdles, gymnastics, shot put and javelin and all won a beautifully designed medal! Please watch the video below to catch up on all the action of the Reception Olympics.

YEARS 7 -12 STUDENT/PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Thursday 19 August
10:00 am to 7:30 pm

NO CLASSES ARE HELD ON THIS DAY. DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS, THESE INTERVIEWS WILL NOW BE HELD ONLINE.

An email containing information regarding the process was sent to Parents/Caregivers on Friday 6 August.

Summary of Dates/Times:

Monday 16 August 9:00 am    Program will close for generation of appointments.

Monday 16 August 3:00 pm    Schedules emailed to Parents/Caregivers. Appointments can be modified if required.

Wednesday 18 August              Final close of program in preparation for interviews.

Thursday 19 August                  Interviews will be conducted online.

While every attempt will be made to ensure all requests are allocated, due to high demand and constraints of the program, not all requests may be met. In order to facilitate the process, please make requests wisely, identifying those teachers with whom you most need to have discussion. Please be assured that should you have any concerns during the term, you are always most welcome to contact staff via email.

To make the most of this opportunity it is important to be prepared. Before your interview, plan specific questions you wish to ask and identify factors of which teachers may need to be aware. The interview process is an opportunity for a two-way discussion where the interests of your child are important considerations for both parties. We also strongly encourage students to attend the interviews in order to enhance the conversation and to hear constructive feedback firsthand. After the interview it is important for parents to follow up on matters discussed at the meeting with their son or daughter. Acknowledge strengths, identify areas where improvements can be made and encourage your child to take responsibility for his/her own learning.

We look forward to seeing you and your child on your selected day.

Mr Gavin O’Reilly, Director of Assessment and Curriculum

YEARS 7-9 LEARNING AND WELLBEING CHARACTER STRENGTH FOCUS

Week 4: Hope

Apart from COVID updates on the news, and the inspiring reports on the competition at the Olympics, at the time of writing this, media attention has turned to the tragic news of the fires in Greece. The devastating impact of climate change, temporarily hiding behind COVID’s shadow, has once again resurfaced in our conversations.

We can all remember our vulnerability to fire as a country in the wake of past disasters, and the fear and destruction caused to the Australian flora, fauna and people. But despite the memories of loss and hurt following the last bushfires, we have other associated memories that offer us something very different to despair.

Remembering these experiences, we also remember the period after the last bushfires, being amazed by the regeneration of nature; the glimpses of green poking through the charred black terrain as a reminder of healing. In the midst of despair nature offered us hope; showing without fail that it prevails in the end. The warmth and generosity of support that flooded victims is another wonderful example of hope in action.

Closer to home our own community has been affected deeply by the loss of one of our own, and as we celebrate Hamish’s life, we also turn to hope to manage the loss and the emotions we feel.

Despite the enormous grief we feel and have felt over recent times at St Michael’s, it’s hope personified we have seen in the support offered to each other on many levels; caring for each other. Hope, together with faith, continues to guide us during this difficult time.

Hope is the perfect strength for these moments, even though we sometimes feel it escapes us.

Science tells us that hope is reported to have positive impact on physical and mental health, providing protection against anxiety and stress, and a stronger ability to bounce back from what can seem impossible. It also helps us to be better communicators, strengthening our relationships, and potentially leading to a longer life with much better physical health.

In Year 7-9 at St Michael’s this week we have actively cultivated the strength of hope. Year 7 and 9 classes utilised hope cards to facilitate conversations in pastoral class, guiding students towards the positive, and goal setting thoughts and behaviours. Students in Year 8 participated in an assembly focusing on cultivating a growth mindset and building their intelligence; a new Yoga/Mindfulness Club was born- Pause Club, which will run each Tuesday at lunchtime, and each day in the daily notices students see an ‘Action for Happiness’ and a link to a daily minute of mindfulness. Breakfast Club has now resumed, after lockdown and restrictions, and further to this our beautiful garden continues to be nurtured by an Eco Squad that focuses on the bounty of nature and welcomes new members with open arms. This is without considering the hope we nurture in the classroom and on the sporting field as students explore their curiosities.

Despite our heartfelt sorrow, our participation in the celebration of Hamish’s life as a community will be steeped in hope; that he rest in peace, that his family and friends be comforted at such an incredibly challenging time, and that we remember his goodness, always.

Whilst having hope may not resolve all of life’s problems, it does give us the strength to persist and to reframe the situation we face in the positive, rather than being overwhelmed by negativity.  Hope whispers that the sun, like the stars, will always return to shine on us, despite momentary darkness, and that both are always present, even when we can’t see them.

As Albus Dumbledore invited us to remember “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light”.(1) Hope gives us the strength to do just this.

May we all find the ‘light switch’ and nurture our hope this week, and at the times we need it most.

Mrs Tonia Carfora, Year 7-9 Learning and Wellbeing Initiatives Leader

YEAR 10 STUDENTS SUBJECT SELECTION FOR YEAR 11 2022

On Wednesday 18 August, Year 10 students need to have submitted their online 2022 Year 11 subject choices, and they will also need to print out a copy of this form, have it signed and hand it up with their completed blue Subject Selection Forms. It is important these steps are completed thoroughly and submitted on time. This will give the allocated subject counsellor time to look over selections and be in a better position to review the suitability of the subject choices. The review appointments are 15 minutes, however some of this time is taken up with the Year 10 PLP Presentation. If you have any queries please email a careers counsellor with a specific question or see the staff at the LEC front desk to book in a time for a more detailed discussion. If sections of the blue form are not completed it makes it very difficult to get to an informed opinion in the subject selection counselling session. Students are reminded to ensure they have checked the ‘assumed knowledge’ for each subject in the Curriculum Handbook, and if a student cannot meet this and still wants to do the subject, it is imperative they discuss this with the relevant Head of Department before the subject counselling session.

YEAR 11 STUDENTS SUBJECT SELECTION FOR YEAR 12 2022

This week Year 11 students attended an assembly and received the materials to support their 2022 Year 12 subject selections. We hope they have made good use of these resources already. Students need to submit their Year 12 subject choices online by Monday 23 August, and they will also need to print off the summary, have it signed and submit it with their fully completed yellow subject selection form by Wednesday 25 August. It is very important students complete ‘Jobs and Courses of Interest’ on the front page of the form so that their allocated subject counsellor has time to go over this prior to the subject counselling session on Thursday 2 September.

When selecting subjects, students should check the ‘assumed knowledge subjects’ for each subject. If a student is listing a subject for which they have not met the assumed knowledge for, they should be approaching the Head of Department to discuss this before attending the subject counselling appointment. We encourage students to ask their Semester 1 teachers what they entered as recommendations for 2022. Students who require assistance should see the staff at the LEC front desk to book an appointment, which for Year 11 students will be open from Friday 19 August. Careers counsellors are always available to answer specific questions via email.

We would like to make families aware of two new subjects in 2022. Essential English will provide a great choice for many students who wish to maintain their English skills to complement employment and TAFESA pathways. Students contemplating pathways in teaching are reminded that any Year 12 English subject is advantageous in English skill development to get through the LANTITE test which is a compulsory part of the graduating Teachers Registration. Please note Essential English does not result in ‘subject bonus points’ towards the ATAR Selection Rank. Health Science is also a new addition and will provide students interested in nursing and health sciences a valuable experience, especially if they feel Biology would be too challenging. It is classified as Scientific Studies by SACE and meets The University of Adelaide STEM Science Academy. This subject traditionally is not exposed to as much ‘scaling’ as many other non exam subjects.

Year 11 students should be aware of the ‘Year 11 Conditional Grade Offer’ schemes that are in place for our students in Year 12 (and likely to be offered again next year). The most important message is to ensure students are trying to achieve in the highest-grade band as possible in Year 11 as this could lead to many opportunities in 2022.

For more information regarding The University of Adelaide ‘Year 11 Entry Pathway’, please click here.

Given the opportunity for individual appointments is quite tight and counsellors are not generally free to take direct phone calls, we welcome any email questions: rose.coorey@smc.sa.edu.au and anthony.vizaniaris@smc.sa.edu.au. 8/9 GIRLS KNOCKOUT FOOTBALL

On Tuesday 10 August, the Year 8/9 Girls Football Team took on the undefeated Nazareth Catholic Community and Blackwood High at Woodville South Football Club. The girls got off to a great start in both games ensuring we had commanding leads into the second halves. Some great defensive work from Madison Kravinskis and Asha Meers ensured that the ball rarely got through into the opposition’s forward line, holding both Nazareth and Blackwood to 6 goals collectively. This enabled SMC to comfortably move through to the Grand Final of the Statewide Knockout Competition later this term.

Even though the girls had to play back-to-back games their pressure and attack on the footy was relentless. Some excellent forward tackling pressure from Amelie Kempster, Lili Dixon, Amelia Boys and Maddison Neilson helped keep the ball forward and allowed 18 majors, including 3 from Zahlia Niemann, a casual 5 from midfielder Emma Kilpatrick across both games and a quiet 4 from ruck Jessie Buhagiar in the last half of the second game.

Both games, however, were won by SMC in the midfield. Emma Kilpatrick, Jessie Buhagiar, Zahlia Niemann, Lily Shea, Zara Kemp and Skye Nagel were all consistent contributors in the midfield and won lots of the ball through pressure on the ball and hard running. Well done to the team for progressing through to our consecutive 8/9 Grand Final appearance.

Mr Dominic Smith, Business, Humanities and Religious Education Teacher – Secondary
