From the Principal
Dear St Michael’s College Community,
Cultural Awareness
Reflecting on last week’s staff professional development, the time shared with colleagues and the cultural workshops led by Your Mob Learning and the Tijindu Foundation were well received.
The program at the Primary Campus was led by Wade Thompson and Rigby Barnes from the Tjindu Foundation. Ms Kate Tyrwhitt, Indigenous Education Coordinator – at the Primary Campus reflected … “ it was a fantastic and engaging session and staff were very grateful for the experience. We thank Wade and Rigby for sharing their knowledge, culture, and humour with us. The Tjindu Foundation facilitates Cultural Awareness Workshops to connect non-First Nations Australians to traditional culture, language, and history. This training is part of our Reconciliation Action Plan to provide opportunities for educators to build and extend their knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. It is important for all Australians to have an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, including their unique connection to the land, seas, skies and waterways. Cultural competence opportunities can help to improve the level of knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, which is the basis for building better relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the wider community.”
Year 12 Retreat
Albeit a short week, Week 7 has been action-packed with the continuation of Year 8 and Year 9 Life Education, Year 10 Drama performances, Year 7 Readers Cup, Primary Campus Tours, Primary photo catch up days and the Year 12 Retreat.
The Year 12 Retreat is a key 3 day event in the College calendar and invariably one of the most memorable experiences of the year. Students travel to one of three locations: Normanville, Walkers Flat, and Wallaroo. The Retreat is a means of engaging senior students, and making links between the world they know and the faith to which they are called. Student evaluations of the Retreat each year confirm its profound value and central place in the St Michael’s Year 12 experience.
We look forward to reading more on this significant event in next week’s newsletter.
2022 Lasallian STARS Parent Welcome Evening
On Thursday 6 June, parents of the 2022 Lasallian STARS (mid-year Reception intake) were invited to join staff from Primary Leadership and Early Primary for an informal gathering to welcome them to the College. The evening began with an Acknowledgement to Country and Prayer, followed by an introduction of staff and some brief insight to St Michael’s College as a learning community. Guests were then invited to mingle and chat with other parents and staff while enjoying refreshments and catering provided by Ms Liesel Dunstan’s Secondary Food Hospitality Students.
Kind regards,
Mr Damian Patton
Acting Principal
