Italian Regional Cooking Workshop & Immersion Day

In Week 4, students in Year 11 and 12 experienced an Italian Immersion Day in the city. This experience allowed students to practice their Italian spoken skills in a range of activities, such as ordering breakfast and lunch in Italian at L’incontro café e Sicily Pizzeria. They participated in a variety of language activities in the State Library, they visited the migration museum and ended the day by watching an Italian film at Palace Nova Cinema.

A week later, Stage 1 Italian students worked with Ilenia and Paolo, owners of Blue Velvet pizzeria, to enhance their understanding of Italian regional cuisine and the factors that have influenced its development over the course of history. This workshop saw students cooking homemade gnocchi al pomodoro and delicious tiramisu.

These experiences enable students to imagine themselves in Italy, providing them with opportunities to develop their spoken Italian and form life-long memories.

Here are some testimonials from the students:

“The activity I enjoyed most was the migration museum treasure hunt because I got to understand about the background history of Italy and find out people’s lives and things I never knew happened.” – Isabella.

“Throughout the day, we spoke in Italian, even when ordering our food. For breakfast I had una cioccolata calda, which is a traditional thick hot chocolate. It was Amazing! During the day we did many language activities to improve our speaking skills, visited the museum, ate pizza for lunch at Sicily, and finished with an Italian film at the Palace Nova Cinema. Era una bella giornata!” – Allegra.

Bravissimi! Sono orgogliosa di tutti voi, ragazzi!
