Empowering Student Voice – Year 10 Peer Support Mentoring
On Wednesday, Year 10 Peer Support Leaders worked with their designated Year 7 classes on Empowering Student Voice by exploring the topic of bullying.
By leading class discussions through educational activities, Year 7 students were not only able to gather an understanding on such an important topic but were able to form relationships with their big brothers and sisters. At the end of the session, Peer Support Leaders assisted Year 7 students with their Anti-Bullying Pledge and united under the banner of being respectful to all and make ‘kindness’ the norm. The Year 7 students enjoyed the opportunity to hear from their Peer Support Leaders who made the content relatable and reminded them that they are always there to support them through their Year 7 experiences.
Aldo Calo, Year 10 Director
“On Wednesday morning we were lucky enough to be visited by our Year 10 Peer Support leaders. They took us through the different aspects of bullying and presented us with lots of helpful information. Our class really liked how the presentation showed other people’s advice for bullying from other schools and who were different ages to us. We especially liked the video about random acts of kindness and I’m sure we will all do our part to keep kindness the norm around our class and SMC. Benjamin Disraeli once said that courage is fire and bullying is smoke. We would like to thank the Year 10 Peer Support leaders for having the courage to speak with us and make it a very fun and enjoyable time. We can’t wait to have them back with us.” – Olivia S and Siena P, Year 7 Students
“On Wednesday last week, I worked with a group of peer support leaders to educate a class of Year 7 boys on the effects of bullying and the school’s policy on it. It was interesting to hear their thoughts and advice in terms of bullying, how to stop it, and who they felt they could turn to. The best part of the morning was making relationships with the students and talking to a group of them post-presentation.” – Massimo M, Year 10 Peer Support Leader
