From the Principal

Last week we celebrated the success of the Class of 2022 at the Academic Assembly. We were honoured to have the Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson, AC Governor of South Australia attend and speak to the College community. This is the first time in the history of St Michael’s College that we have had the Governor of South Australia visit. It was a celebration of success and a day that St Michael’s College should be extremely proud of.

Cocurricular sport has certainly ramped up over the weekend, cricket, volleyball , tennis, water polo and badminton all began in earnest.

Being a sporting tragic all of my life, I see many parallels with sport and life. In sport it’s important that you play with the spirit that is intended. If you win, you need to be gracious in victory, respecting the opposition for without them you don’t have a game. In today’s society it is difficult for referees and umpires because they are under increased scrutiny and in some circumstances unfairly treated by spectators. When we win, we win with dignity and there will always be a respect for the game.

If we lose, it’s alright to be disappointed but not for too long for it is only a game. In life handling disappointment is a very valuable character trait. We dust ourselves off and continue on, for there are no failures in life only learning experiences.

To conclude this newsletter we need to acknowledge that Wednesday marked the beginning of Lent leading into the Easter. Those of my vintage would remember the Fridays of Lent, where the only offerings in the cafeteria were fish fingers or fish cakes. Needless to say there was not much seafood in these items as advertised. Today we encourage people to give up something small in order to experience some discomfort during the Lenten period. It concludes with the celebration of Easter Sunday where our Saviour is risen again.

God Bless

Mr Tony Daley
