The decade of celebration
“This anniversary is a celebration of forty years of toil and effort… particularly the teaching of the young… In the great task of founding, establishing and then bringing to maturity the schools of the De La Salle Order, the Brothers have been strongly supported by lay teachers, administration and ancillary staff and parents.” - Prime Minister Paul Keating
1991
Br Paul establishes a rational structure for the governance of the College. The Headmaster now oversees the running of both campuses. A Deputy Headmaster is appointed at the Secondary Campus.
The College Board is born.
The South Australian Certificate of Education Stage 1 for Year 11 students is introduced into all secondary schools in the state.
1993
The success of the Parents and Friends Association continues, with computer facilities added at both campuses.
1994
St Michael’s celebrates 40 years of Lasallian education. Prime Minister at the time, Paul Keating, awarded the school with a celebratory letter.
Primary policies are reviewed and it becomes the first Catholic school to develop and implement a comprehensive Bullying and Harassment Policy.
Year 9 and 10 students participate in ‘Co-curricular Week’, which includes fishing days, archery lessons, aquatics, cycling, caving, a ski and canoe trip, and a bushwalk.
Performing Arts takes off, too. 94’ sees the first high-tech production mounted with computer-operated lighting, stage-management, and midi-systems to produce music.
Fr Chris Murphy (old scholar, 1963) was appointed Parish Priest of Henley and Grange.
1995
A new Principal is welcomed, Br John Pill. He comes with a vision to encourage the College’s religious message. Much of his ideals of creating a supportive and warm atmosphere already existed, but his work redefines them.
A Campus Consolidation Committee is formed to facilitate the move of Year 8 classes to the Secondary Campus. Beverley would maintain its focus as a primary school.
1996
The enrolments at Secondary Campus grew to 691 students.
The Primary Campus welcomes new Deputy Principal, Mr Gabby Tullio.
The music instrument program is expanded, leading to a successful concert at the Junior School Heads of Australia Music Festival.
On the sporting field, the Primary A Football team are named State Champions. The secondary students field a baseball team and win the statewide Knockout Baseball Competition.
The ‘Development Office’ is set up, with a vision to secure long term financial viability of the institution. Plans are made to promote social, cultural and economic interaction both within the community – through an Old Scholar Association and open days to exhibit student work.
1997
The full Year 8 cohort joins the Secondary Campus, fulfilling the vision of successive Principals over three decades.
The year closes with the successful transition, the development of IT facilities and school-to-work programmes with TAFE, and leadership growth.
1997 also sees the first Memorial Mass.
1999
14 Year 12 students receive Merit Certificates at Government House.
