VET and Careers Services
The 2023 SMC VET Program has commenced with much excitement and enthusiasm. Over 150 Year 11 and 12 students have commenced their VET courses in a wide variety of fields ranging from the traditional trades to individual care, business studies, computer programming and coding, aviation, fitness and everything in between!
Students have started their VET studies extremely well and I have received very encouraging feedback from their training providers. I am looking to an exciting year ahead as our students flourish in their VET Studies.

Western Technical College Open Day
Horticulture Course
Do you enjoy practical hands-on learning and working outdoors? Are you concerned about the environment?
During subject selections last year Blake, Max and Kye identified they were interested in undertaking a VET course. After conversations about their interests and preferred learning styles the students were keen to enrol in AHC20416: Certificate II in Horticulture at the SA Learning Centre. Delivered in the Registered Training Organisation’s beautiful grounds at North Brighton, the students have the opportunity to develop the practical skills needed for indoor and outdoor-based activities, such as planting, weeding and recognising and identifying plants and learn how to maintain and operate outdoor gardening equipment such as mowers, blowers and irrigation systems.
Last week the students spent some of the day maintaining the dunes to preserve and protect the plants and native animals.
If this or any VET course is of interest to you, please contact Ms Leanne De Young, VET Coordinator, VET@smc.sa.edu.au Tel: 81502351
Celebrating Graduate Pathways
This week we celebrate three of our students beginning their studies in Dentistry at The University of Adelaide.
Each took a different pathway to be competitive for an offer. Jayden Nguyen (Dux Proxime Accessit from 2022) who got in directly from Year 12 with his wonderful ATAR, strong UCAT Score and excellent performance in the Multiple Mini Interview. Patrick Rawlins (2021 graduate) strengthened his ATAR, UCAT performance and interviews skills during a gap type year in 2022. Frank Levak (2021 Graduate) with a Rural background, good UCAT performance, strong first year university GPA performance and sound interview skills also resulted in a position in the Dentistry course.
We wish them all the best with their studies ahead and may even look forward to a booking in for a dentist appointment with them in 2028.
